Blu-ray also known as Blue-ray disc (BD) is the new generation of optical disc format in technological advanced where it will give change in the home entertainment world nowadays. It is the next-generation optical disc format that was developed by a group of computer and consumer electronics companies known as Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA).
The benefit of Blu-ray disc is, it enables for a greater storage of information over the traditional DVD, where it is 5 times more available on a Blu-ray disc. The Blu-ray disc use a blue ray laser to read the information where as DVD’s use a red laser. By then, blue laser wave lengths are shorter therefore allow more storage to be used. This means a standard DVD hold up only to 25 GB, but a dual layer of Blu-ray disc can hold up to 45 to 50 GB of data. In the economy, the growing number of broadband connections allow consumers to download large amounts of data, as well as the increasing audio, video and photo capabilities of personal computers has led to another level in data storage requirements. In addition, commercial storage requirements are growing fast due to the growth of e-mail and to the paperless processes.
Blu-ray technology will change the way we watching movies and high definition videos and also in the gaming industry. For examples, in the gaming industry, Sony Playstation 3 comes with the ability to play Blu-ray discs. Therefore, it main competitor, the X-Box 360only has HD-DVD player and has a high cost. By this, it will boost the economic of the technological market such as for Computers Company, gaming company, Movies Company and etc. Increased popularity of Blu-ray Disc will likely stimulate awareness and sales of High Definition TV sets.
Apart from that, Blu-ray disc technology has created a way to solve the piracy problem. Blu-ray Disc provides some of the strongest copy protection methods ever developed for any consumer format. It makes Blu-ray Disc the best choice for any content publisher wanting assurance that their valuable assets are protected from piracy. We have know that reducing software piracy rates requires the combined of policy-makers, software developers and publishers, businesses, journalists and concerned individuals. As long as software piracy exists, there will be fewer jobs, less research and development, increased costs and lower standards of living. With Blu-ray advanced, this problem no longer exists.
Despite that, Blu-ray technologies have high cost. At comparable, Blu-ray Disc production costs are 10% more cost than the DVD production costs, although a Blu-ray disc offers 5-10 x the capacity.
Advantage
GDP is the best measurement of growth of nation economy. The definition of gross domestic product (GDP) is the market value of all goods and services produce within a country in a given period of time. The goods and services which are including in GDP measurement are actually limited to characters:
1. Got market value
2. All of the item or raw material that has been use to produce is legally and it also it sold legally.
3. Final goods
4. It produce at the current period (In a given period)
5. The goods produce within the country
As we know, the blu-ray is the technology that contains a high security. This high security will restrict the activity of pirating the DVD. Nowadays, so many DVD pirate was sold in the market. The seller just need a low cost to “burn” the DVD and sells it illegally. This activity actually doesn’t contribute anything to the growth of economy because the selling of piracy DVD is not included in GDP. The reason is, it is illegal. Only the legal goods is needed to measure GDP. The discovery of blu-ray technology actually decreases the selling of DVD piracy. Customer just only can get the DVD do they want by getting the original one to the seller which is sells the DVD legally. Each of the DVD original sold, it absolutely will contribute to the increases in nation’s GDP. At the end, we may get the result of increasing in GDP overtime. Increasing in GDP indicate the economic is growth.
When the GDP is increase, it will give the impact in the standard of living where the standard of living is depend on GDP per person. Clearly, when GDP increase rapidly, the standard of living will increase also. So, we can make a sense that the blu-ray technology indirectly contributes the increases in standard of living in society.
Disadvantage
The Blu-ray is the latest technology. The newer technology, the higher cost of it expenses. It is because it still new in the market and the return from this technology is quite low impact of the people is not yet familiar with it.
A large amount of cost requires applying this technology in production activity. It includes the transfer of the old technology to the new technology that is able to support the blu-ray technology. For example, the introduction of Blu-ray DVD derived from the introduction of the new PS3. Sony stated that, the technology in PS3 just support the Blu-ray DVD. In other word, PS3 is just for Blu-ray DVD. It contras with the technology in PS2 which it can support all of DVD regardless the DVD is original or not. Clearly, we can see that, to apply the Blu-ray DVD, we must have the technology that can support it so that it can work. But, to establish the technology that can support Blu-ray is requiring a high cost. Additionally, we will face a double high cost which is first, the high cost to establish the technology of blu-ray. Second, the high cost to establish the technology to support Blu-ray. This double cost occur because blu-ray and other new player (support by blu-ray) especially PS3 is a complimentary goods. The law of complimentary goods is, if a demand of that good increase, it complement good also increase.
Conclusion
The piracy of DVD will not only give a negative impact to the producer, but also bad to economic development. It is because the piracy wasting in term of GDP measurement because it doesn’t contribute anything in increasing of GDP. The introduction of the blu-ray technology will help to restrict the piracy activity. Customers just can get the DVD do the interest by getting the original DVD from the legal seller. Society must support this technology so that it may work in economic activity to make sure economy will get growth overtime.
